Scott Shand

Hello and welcome to the SDS RACING website. Please navigate your way around the site by clicking the links above.

We are the privateer team of rider number 5, Scott Shand, competing in the 2008 Shark/Pirelli 600cc Scottish Sport Production series.

HISTORY2.gif

Scott is 35 and hails from sunny Stenhousemuir in Central Scotland and makes his living as a process technician for BP.

A long time ago, at a party far far away, Scott argued that he "wasn't into bikes".....and then he had a go on Butler's Yamaha FZR 600!

Scott became a biking devotee overnight, and within weeks had bought a Suzuki GS 125, then the above Yamaha FZR 600, a Kawasaki ZX-7R, Honda Fireblade, and on and on . . . The rest, as they say, is history.

He has now been racing for 10 years in the UK, beginning his career on board a Suzuki RGV 250 in the Scottish 250 Supersport Championship with which he took his first race win at Knockhill in 1999, before moving on to an Aprilia RS250 with which the Melville Club 250 Championship was won, along with the NEMCRC 250cc championship.

Scott then took the big step up to a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K1 in 2002, winning the Melville Club 1000cc Open class in his first year on a big bike.

2003 would prove to be a difficult year, with a broken wrist side-lining Scott for the early part of the season. The remainder of the racing year was used as an extended test session on board a GSX-R 1000 K3.

This was the bike that Scott would take to 5th place in the Scottish Production Championship in 2004, whilst also racing a Kawasaki ZXR 400 in the Scottish 400 Sport Production class at the same time, a class that went right down to the wire, and which Scott won on the last round of the year. Scott was also part of the Scottish team who won the annual Celtic Match races against teams from Ireland, Wales, and the Isle Of Man in 2004.

The team also took part in the prestigious and infamous North West 200 road races in Northern Ireland in 2003 & 2004 with a fastest lap time of 4:45.13 min in the Superbike race of 2004.

2005 was another brave step into the unknown with an entry into the British MRO Powerbike Championship on board an almost Superbike spec Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K3. This was a fantastic and competitive season of racing, with the highlight being a 1st and 2nd place finish at the Knockhill round and an excellent and well deserved 3rd place finish in the championship at the seasons end.

2006 was a year of mixed fortunes. We entered one of the most competitive classes in UK racing, the British Superstock Cup, and although Scott was achieving regular top ten finishes and showing steady improvement, the cost was spiraling through the roof to the point where we simply could not continue without some kind of sponsor backing. This meant that Scott and the team had no option but to withdraw from the Cup.

With a non-existent budget, Scott decided to concentrate on the Scottish racing scene in 2007, entering the 1000cc Sport Production class. Things were going well until a huge crash at East Fortune in April  nearly ended Scott's career and left him requiring skin grafts on his left wrist. After a period of recovery, the GSX-R was sold on to make room for a 2006 Yamaha YZF-R6 and an entry into the hotly contested 600cc Production Series. Podiums in every round entered resulted in a well deserved 5th place in the championship. Not bad considering Scott missed the first 8 races!

2006 Yamaha YZF-R6  which has been gratefully financed with contributions from Jim Kennedy of JK Tyres & Autocentre. All chassis work has been carried out by Tim Seed of Technical Racing Developments.

A Shark/Pirelli 600 Production Series bike is a standard road bike up to 600cc that can be purchased from any local dealer. The bikes must be based on current production road-going models and although front suspension modifications may be made and an exhaust end can fitted, the engine and rear suspension must remain as it was when it left the factory. The control tyres used in the class are Pirelli Diablo Corsa III's in the dry and Metzeler Racetecs full racing wets when it rains.

SPONSORS2.gif

If you would like to see your company name or logo in big letters on the side of a 180 mph racing bike, or if you would like to be listed on the team entry in the race program, or if you just have too damn much disposable income and want to help support a local racer with a proven track record (no pun intended), then please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you!

Sponsorship can mean anything from a set of brake pads to as much as you want to spend, every little helps and we're not greedy! Any support is better than no support.

You can click on the PayPal link below if you would like to contribute.

Many thanks for your contribution, however small, and we guarantee that every penny will go into racing.

New 2

Sunday 4th May

Finally, the 2008 season gets under way, but it was mixed fortunes from Knockhill this weekend. A decent result in race 1 was wiped out by a crash in race 2.

Click here to read all about it.

Sunday 6th April 2008

A weekend to forget. Unseasonably cold weather and intermittent hail helped Scott to a nasty highside during practice 1 on Saturday afternoon. Scott exited the hairpin as normal, but the rear Pirelli spun up on the wet kerbing, spitting Scott off to the outside of the track as the bike spun across to the inside.
Damage to the bike was minor, a bar-end, a footpeg, a crash mushroom, and a screen, but Scott took a bit of a beating, destroying his leathers, gloves, and helmet, in the process.

We awoke on Sunday morning to find Knockhill under a blanket of fresh snow, with temperatures even colder than Saturday, no more than 3 or 4 degrees or so. Finally, after a long wait, the organisers did what everyone thought they should do, and cancelled the meeting. We live to fight another day.

Friday 21st March 2008

A successful test session at East Fortune last Sunday saw Scott circulating in the high 64 second bracket, and managing to keep Adrian Clark's brand new Kawasaki ZX10-R behind him for six laps or so.

The session was really just an opportunity for Scott to get back on a race bike and get acclimatised to the new control tyre for the season ahead, the Pirelli Diablo Corsa III, surely the worst looking race tyre in history!

The team are now prepared and raring to go for the season ahead. It'll be good to be back racing.

22nd February 2008

First news of 2008 is that Scott will be running number 5 this year.

The bike is ready to race after winter preparation and it's first outing will be at East Fortune on March 16th for testing. It should be an interesting season this year, with new faces joining the championship, and a switch to Pirelli Diablo Corsa 3 control tyres. These were the control tyres in last years Virgin Media R6 Cup, so they shoud be an improvement on last season's Metzelers.

The End Of Another Season

"It's been a difficult season, but I'm really happy with the results that we've been getting, and I have to say a few thank you's to Jim Kennedy, Andy Turner, all at Jim Allan Motorcycles, Lazer Helmets, Putoline oils, RPM Motorcycles, Tim Seed, my pit crew of Gordon Inch & Alan Butler, and everyone else who has helped me this year. See you in 2008!" - Shandy #56
